Safia named 2005 Schwab Entrepreneur

Principals: Safia and James Minney (British) – This social entrepreneurial couple have for 14 years worked relentlessly to educate the public on environmental and social justice issues by establishing the citizens’ group Global Village in their home, where for 10 years 17 people crowded the young family into one room before moving to commercial premises.

In 1995 Safia established the Fair Trade Company to upgrade the skills of marginalized handicraft and garment producers giving 50% advance payments on orders where needed, providing design and quality control training, and marketing the products in Japan (where they live) and the UK.

To make ends meet, Safia and James have invested themselves and their personal income, re-mortgaged their home, and offered a personal guarantee against the company's bank borrowings, which commits their future earnings. Thus they personally act as a cushion to bear the risks faced by the producer in the marketplace.

Safia and James are responsible for creating sustainable livelihoods for more than 10,000 people and their families in 20 countries using traditional skills and environmentally sensitive production techniques, such as organic cotton in rural areas.

Safia is a perpetual motion crusader, with her eyes constantly on her goal: a fairer world. So committed is she to her cause that she took only two days maternity leave following the birth of both her children. PeaceDiviners™ is seeking a venture philanthropist to take over the inflexible bank financing. We would also like to fund strategic business assistance to help make the increasingly higher-profile Fair Trade Company's work sustainable, without having to compromise its principles to generate short-term profits to satisfy venture capitalist requirements.
